An accessible and authoritative approach to effective science teaching, this text is the work of 16 contributors who each employ a single metaphor that will resonate with readers --that science education can and should be considered an exciting game. With “ Windows Into the Classroom” personal accounts and “ The Game in Action” vignettes students are provided with practical applications throughout the book. Many contributors to this book were involved in the development and draft review of the National Science Education Standards, and therefore fully appreciate the importance of overtly linking research-based commentary and recommendations to the Standards. As a result, the entire work is steeped in a current research foundation tied closely to the National Science Education Standards. Features of this new text: “ Windows into the classroom” personal accounts and “ The Game in Action” vignettes provide practical applications throughout the book. Written in accessible first person accounts, each contributor takes a conversational approach that will appeal to a broad audience of readers. Scientific Research in Education by Richard J. Shavelson,
Scientific Research in Education by Richard J. Shavelson,
Researchers, historians, and philosophers of science have debated the nature of scientific research in education for more than 100 years. Recent enthusiasm for "evidence-based" policy and practice in education -- now codified in the federal law that authorizes the bulk of elementary and secondary education programs -- has brought a new sense of urgency to understanding the ways in which the basic tenets of science are manifested in the study of teaching, learning, and schooling. Scientific Research in Education describes the similarities and differences between scientific inquiry in education and scientific inquiry in other fields and disciplines and provides a number of examples to illustrate these ideas. Its main argument is that all scientific endeavors share a common set of principles, and that each field -- including education research -- develops a specialization that accounts for the particulars of what is being studied. The book also provides suggestions for how the federal government can best support high-quality scientific research in education.

Research Science Institute - The Research Science Institute (RSI) is a highly competitive summer research program for rising high school seniors around the world, sponsored by the Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) and hosted by MIT. Founded by Admiral H.

Center for Research and Education in Optics and Lasers - The Center for Research and Education in Optics and Lasers (or CREOL) is a research center within the Orlando, Florida-based College of Optics and Photonics, a graduate college for optical science and engineering at the University of Central Florida.

Center for Excellence in Education - The Center for Excellence in Education is a non-profit educational organization that receives funding from several private and public donors, including the US Department of Defense, and funds several programs aimed towards advancing science and technology education, including the Research Science Institute and the USA Biology Olympiad.
